Chevrolet has announced pricing of the Volt range extender EV and Camaro Coupe and Convertible muscle cars which launch in the UK in Spring 2012.
Regardless of whether you are a petrol head or an environmentalist, Chevrolet has it covered. Let’s start with the green stuff first.
The Chevrolet Volt is a range extender EV, meaning it runs on electricity but when the batteries die, a four cylinder 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine with 150bhp kicks in to top them up. Owners should be able to travel 50 miles on battery power alone before the car sparks up the Internal Combustion Engine. Under some circumstances the energy the petrol engine is generating also goes straight to driving the electric motors spinning the front wheels. Using both a fully filled battery and fuel tank, the car has a total possible range of 370 miles before it needs topping up with petrol.
The Chevrolet Volt will come with a high spec as standard, including a leather interior, and after the Government’s £5,000 incentive has been applied, will be priced from £28,545.
No performance specs revealed, nor have the European combined cycle or CO2 figures yet been released.
Now the news you’ve really been waiting for — the Chevrolet Camaro. Muscle cars are seeing a resurgence in the US and Chevrolet’s effort is competing against new versions of the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. GM is the only one that has seen fit to bring its ‘pony car’ over to the UK, although we’ll have to tolerate left hand drive, which will make it a rare site on British roads sadly.
But we get a high spec, including leather seats, and suspension tuned to European tastes.
The engine spec is mouth watering. A 6.2 litre petrol V8 (from the Corvette) pushes out 426bhp and is matched to a six speed gearbox for a 155mph top speed and 0-60mph dash in 4.6 seconds. The price? Just £34,995 for the Coupe and £39,995 for the (fabric roofed) Convertible. Can you think where else you can get more power for the money? If you want an automatic for a real American feel then add £1,500. No figures released yet on efficiency, but we’d guess around 22mpg with CO2 emissions of just over 300g/km.
Chalk and cheese then.
As stated, both the Chevrolet Volt and Camaro go on sale in the UK in Spring 2012.
