A long journey can be stressful at any time of year, but if they go wrong at Christmas they can become a nightmare.
Peter Rodger, the UK’s most advanced driver and chief examiner for the Institute of Advanced Motorists, is generously sharing his top tips for keeping yourself safe whilst driving this Christmas.
Preparation is key
Double check the vitals: top up your washer fluid, check tyre pressure and make sure your lights are working.
Many breakdowns at Christmas are caused by a simple lack of fuel. Don’t be tempted to slim down your Christmas budget by not topping up enough.
Even if you’re familiar with the route, make sure you have enough fuel to keep you going in case of delays or diversions.
Plan ahead
Remember to check and plan for the weather conditions of your starting point and destination, as at this time of year there can be huge variations across the country.
Stay abreast of changes with radio updates, and make sure you have a map in case you need to take a different route.
Share the burden
On long journeys, share the driving with at least one other person, and take regular breaks.
Rodger recommends that drivers avoid over-night journeys unless absolutely necessary.
On the road
Be considerate of the needs of other drivers, even if they’re being hesitant: they might well be taking an unfamiliar route.
Take nough of your children’s favourite past-times and snacks to keep them occupied.
Emergency preparation
Keep an emergency kit in the car in case the worst happens.
Rodger recommends packing a shovel, ice scraper, reflective jacket, spare clothes, food and water.
Make sure your mobile is fully charged and you have your breakdown assistance provider’s number on it.
