… and we wish it hadn’t. As the Fiat-Doblo based 2012 Vauxhall Combo isn’t a looker.
Manufactured in Turkey and sharing its underpinnings with the MPV/commercial vehicle from the Italian automaker, Vauxhall sister company Opel has just released this official picture of the replacement for the Combo, which went out of production this year after a 10 year run — it was based on the previous shape Corsa “C” which ended production in passenger car form in 2006.
The current Corsa “D” has spawned a Corsa Van already — the supermini with no rear side windows, in essence — but for the successor to the larger Combo GM has turned to Fiat, who had a solution ready for the Doblo. Seem odd? Not really, as Fiat and GM have a joint venture to develop vehicles together on the ‘Gamma’ platform, which underpins the Doblo, Corsa, Punto, Alfa Romeo Mito and Chevrolet Spark and Aveo.
So we’ll be seeing the monster above with Vauxhall badges on it to fill the gap in their commercial range between the Corsa Van and the mid-sized Vivaro panel van, where it will do battle against the Ford Transit Connect.
Don’t expect to see the windowed MPV here badged up as a Vauxhall however — this is likely to remain for Europe only with the UK seeing only panel van versions, probably liveried up as Royal Mail or British Gas, both of whom bought vast numbers of the old Combo.
