New Peugeot 208 To Achieve Sub-100g/km CO2 Figures

The new 208,  Peugeot’s replacement for the 207 supermini, should achieve sub-100g/km CO2 figures from its petrol engines as well as the diesel models when it goes on sale in 2012.

The Peugeot 208 will feature new three cylinder 1.0 and 1.2 litre petrol engines, as well as share four cylinder petrol and diesel engines with other Peugeot models.  The 1.6 litre THP turbo petrol engine from the Peugeot RCZ  Coupé will power a range topping 208 GTi with around 200bhp.

But the smaller engines will make headlines too, with the three cylinder petrols achieving sub-100g/km CO2 emissions with the assistance of stop/start systems.  Expect the diesels to do likewise, as the Peugeot 208 will share oil burners with sister-brand Citroen’s C3 which have, this week, been re-rated to as low as 93g/km for the e-HDi “micro-hybrid” variants with stop/start.  A weight reduction of 100kg over the car it replaces will further help with fuel consumption and emissions.

As with the current Peugeot 207, the 208 will be available as a three and five door hatch and five door SW estate.  A Coupé-Cabriolet CC is also expected, following a line started with the Peugeot 206.  Rumoured is a Peugeot 208-based super compact SUV/cross-over to take on Vauxhall’s forthcoming Corsa-based SUV.

Expect the new Peugeot 208 to debut at the Geneva motor show next March ahead of sales starting later in 2012.  Prices will be similar to the model it replaces, so starting from just below £10,000.
