New Vauxhall Meriva – Test Drive Report and Car Review

What is the Vauxhall Meriva?  It’s not a hatch like a Vauxhall Astra, yet its sold as a family car but it is not like the acclaimed Vauxhall Zafira as obviously it is not a 7 seater.

Well firstly, the Meriva has a range of models including:-

Meriva Expression from £12495

Meriva S from £16205

Meriva S Air con from £16715

Meriva Exclusiv from £16875

Meriva Excite from £17230

Meriva Exclusiv with Air con from £17385

Meriva SE with Air Con from £18180

All these are retail prices, and certainly not what you pay if you were to buy a Vauxhall Meriva from OSV

Back to the car, well the big thing about this car is the rear doors open the wrong way

Vauxhall Meriva Test Drive and Car Review

I still have not worked out why this is of benefit, so please, if you have any ideas comment on this blog, but it does make the vehicle unique.

The boot size is surprisingly big, plenty of space for the major supermarket shop or all that stuff which builds in a family car, and Vauxhall have done well with the space for the rear passengers, so it is a practical car for space.

I was surprised that there are very few storage compartments at the front of the vehicle, however it does have a moveable centre arm rest.

The Vauxhall I was driving was a Meriva 1.4 SE petrol. The engine is not responsive which is disappointing and you do need to “work it” to get up to speed on a dual carriageway, however, once at 70 it will cruise comfortably in 5th gear.  It is not designed to be a sports car, you can nip around town with the car full of people and luggage, which is exactly what it says on the box.

In addition the car I was driving had one of those massive all glass roofs with an electric blind to cover it up when you wanted to.  It does make the interior nice and bright.

It has a 5 star NCAP rating so you know your family will be safe if the unthinkable happens.  The Meriva I had will return over 40mpg and if you go for the 1.3 CDTi you will get over 50 mpg.

So how about buying one?  They are great value used.  A  3 year old used Vauxhall Meriva can be yours for just £6000 from OSV including delivery, pre-vehicle inspection and full service history.  If you prefer to finance it you would be hard put to find something much better value on Hire Purchase with only £1000 deposit it could cost as little as £130 a month – astonishing value.
