Peugeot has announced the Peugeot 508 SW RXH, its own take on the Audi ‘Allroad’, Subaru ‘Outback’ and Volvo ‘Cross Country’ theme – and it’s a hybrid.
Higher and wider than the Peugeot 508 SW Estate on which it is based, it gets a diesel electric hybrid setup powering all four wheels, enabling it to boast off road ability just like its cross-roader rivals. But unlike anything else out there in the sector, it’s CO2 rating is just 109g/km.
Using the four cylinder 2.0 litre diesel HDi Hybrid4 powertrain that debuted in the Peugeot 3008, it pushes 163bhp as an internal combustion engine; add a 37bhp electric motor and you get a total of 200bhp and four wheel drive. It’s also capable of running on 100% electricity alone to achieve zero rating CO2 emissions, perfect for town driving and slow running. In normal use, however, the diesel will fire up to enable greater distances to be covered faster, achieving a fuel consumption of 67.2mpg at the same time. Operating like this, emissions are 109g/km, still exceptional for the class and size of vehicle.
The Peugeot 508 SW RXH introduces a new badge to the Peugeot range and gets a unique level of finish and equipment coherent with the top-of-the-range and technological positioning of the vehicle. As standard it gets a keyless entry system, electric front seats, head up display, 18 inch alloy wheels, panoramic glass roof, dark-tinted acoustic laminated side windows, and the latest generation of audio and satellite navigation. It also gets unique LED daytime running lights, three vertical bars on each side of the grille, intended to resemble lions’ claws.
Expect a motor show debut at Frankfurt in September. The car will go on sale in 2012 priced, we are guessing, at around £34,000.
