The Kia Sorento’s New Purpose

The Kia Sorento Donated to HMP Wayland

At the moment Kia are stealing headlines across the automotive world for the bold new direction of cars like the Kia Trick’ster and Kia cee’d.

However, Kia are also taking a pivotal role in supporting more individual transformations too.

After an appeal for to help restock the mechanics workshop at HM Prison Wayland in Norfolk, Kia has donated a Kia Sorento.

A gift that keeps on giving

The Kia Sorento will be enable prisoners to get hands-on experience using a new car, enhancing the mechanical skills courses offered at the prison.

These include IMI (Institute of Motoring Industry) qualifications, as well as a range of NVQs.

In the current economic climate, the motor mechanics workshop has been struggling to find funding for new equipment.

An innovative appeal from one of the prison workers asked car companies to donate parts, equipment and vehicles, to which Kia responded in style.

They know that giving prisoners a chance at education is one of the most vital factors to prevent re-offending, particularly for the younger men who might have had little opportunity at school or college.

With automotive engineering moving at a fast pace as technology advances, Kia’s generous gift means that prisoners can gain up-to-date experience that will give them a greater chance of finding full time work in the automotive industry once they are released.

As rates of re-offending are significantly lower among prisoners who are able to find full time employment upon their release, the Kia Sorento might give back far more to society than its face value.

A Kia source says that they are delighted to be able to offer valuable assistance to the prison.

He says that they hope that after the very difficult lives many of the prisoners have had, the experience they gain using the Kia Sorento will help them turn their lives around.

As well as this gift, Kia and HMP Wayland are both keen to carry on their partnership.

Fit for any purpose

That’s Kia’s boast about the Sorento, and as we’ve seen at HMP Wayland it’s true even in contexts not imagined by most car buyers!

Kia didn’t say why the Sorento had be chosen from their range to be donated, but we suspect it’s to win the SUV’s popularity and versatility.
