(Well the only one) It looks like a coupe but has all the rugged sensibility of a hefty SUV, and merges the two different car types together extremely well. Indeed, we can’t think of an example of a car that has mixed dogged off-road ability with chic styling this well before.
And if you’re on the lookout for a stylish SUV that is armed with all the latest advanced technology, this prodigious machine is a solid bet. OSV takes a closer look at what it’s all about with our Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible review.
On The Road
Although this is a fairly big crossover, it’s relatively small when you compare it to the rest of the Evoque’s line-up. To get the best out of it on the road, it’s a good idea to pay out an extra £800 for the Adaptive Dynamics system, which offers you more composure when tackling bends. It also does a grand job at retaining comfort.
In terms of the engines, the quickest in the range is a 2.0-litre petrol unit that can get you from rest to 62mph in a matter of 7.6 seconds. However, to extract that sort of performance out of this beast, you will need to work it fairly hard.[vc_single_image image=”44747″ img_size=”article-image”]The most powerful diesel is considerably more sluggish and takes a solid 9.0 seconds to cover the 0-62mph sprint when paired up with an automatic ‘box, and 10.0 seconds if you opt for the manual transmission. In the real world, though, you won’t notice all that much difference in performance. The diesel has bags of pulling power and overtaking is a fairly simple task.
The least powerful diesel covers the 0-62mph dash in 11.2 seconds, but because it offers the best fuel economy, we reckon most buyers will be perfectly happy with those numbers.
You can fit the car with a 9-speed automatic gearbox, which is a smooth shifter and suits the luxurious nature of the Evoque Convertible. It provides good fuel economy, but it’s not particularly fast. The Evoque Cabriolet also comes with four-wheel-drive if you want it, but although you won’t need it very often, it ensures that the car has a good off-road ability. The brand’s Terrain Response system, meanwhile, is available across the range.
Interior, Design & Build
This convertible is the cheapest of all the Evoque’s. Despite this, it doesn’t look or feel it. Leather and metal adorn most of the cabin, giving it an upmarket feel. Comfort is good, with an adjustable steering wheel and driver’s seat ensuring that it won’t take long for you to get the driving position you’re happiest with. The large door mirrors and raised driving position make for good visibility.
Clever technology abounds too, which brings this car up to date with its slickest rivals. The suspension, meanwhile, does a good job or protecting you against some of our worst road surfaces, while exterior noise is well kept out.[vc_single_image image=”44751″ img_size=”article-image”]The dash is especially luxurious. The plastics that are used have expensive-looking finishes, and the metal controls look easy on the eye. The new infotainment system is classy and user friendly and comes with a few neat features including the ability for the passenger to watch a DVD while the driver concentrates on satellite navigate directions at the same time – from the same screen. This feature, though, is only available with Autobiography an HSE Dynamic Lux models. The Range Rover Evoque Cabriolet was never going to be as practical as the rest of the Evoque range, but it’s still got a roomy interior and more space than the even smaller three-door coupe. If you opt for a four-wheel-drive model, you’ll also get more off-road and towing ability.
You can get this car in either a three or five-door body style. The three-door is smarter looking, but the five-door has more practicality. It has much more headroom and a bit more legroom. Meanwhile, the boot is officially measured at 575-litres, but it’s only 575-litres if you will it right the way up to the roof. Just up to the rear parcel shelf it offers 420-litres of space.
Equipment
Standard equipment across the range is good, with even the basic model coming with plenty of equipment. This includes a leather steering wheel, heated leather seats, 18” alloys, a DAB digital radio, cruise control, an eight-speaker stereo, and all-round parking sensors. Opt for the SE Tech trim and you’ll get sat nav, black styling inserts and a heated windscreen.
The HSE Dynamic line adds 20” alloys, a premium satellite navigation, a better InControl Touch Pro Infotainment system and 12-way adjustable front seats, while HSE Dynamic Lux comes with a panoramic sunroof and a surround-sound stereo. The range-topping Autobiography model offers 14-way adjustable seats and a full leather interior.[vc_single_image image=”44749″ img_size=”article-image”]
Costs Of The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible
Prices for the new car start out from around £30,600 and rise to just over £51,000 for the range-topping trim. If you want to lease it for 24 months, you’d be looking at paying somewhere between £600 – £750 + VAT per month, while leasing it over 60 months would set you back between £470 – £555 + VAT a month.
If you opt for a two-wheel-drive model, fuel economy returns of over 60mpg should be easily achievable. Naturally, you will have to deal with poorer off-road ability. Running costs will also differ if you choose to go for a heftier five-door variant instead of the three-door coupe.[vc_single_image image=”44748″ img_size=”article-image”]For the best efficiency, the 2.0-litre diesel engine is the standout choice. Capable of returning 67.3mpg, it’s only available in two-wheel-drive guise, and is paired up with a manual ‘box.
Opt for the more powerful 180bhp variant of the 2.0-litre diesel unit that comes with 4WD as standard, and fuel economy is reduced to 58.9mpg.
The 2.0-litre 240bhp petrol is unsurprisingly less efficient and less economical. You can’t get it with a manual transmission and have to settle for returns of 36.2mpg.
The Evoque convertible holds onto its value quite well and should be worth 55% of its purchase price after three years of ownership. It’s not cheap to insure, though, with the entry-level model occupying insurance group 32, and the range-topping model sitting in insurance group 41.
Pros and Cons Of The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible
Pros:
Cons:
A Good Off-Roader
Despite its audacious coupe styling, a huge part of this car’s personality comes from its awesome off-road capability. Steering is well felt at the wheel, and it’s reasonably enough weighted. It plants itself well on the road and feels meaty, but yet it’s still light enough so that its off-road capabilities don’t become too monstrous.
Slick Design
A crossover convertible could easily have gone wrong, even if Dr. Frankenstein was no where to be seen. But Land Rover should be commended for doing a sterling job with the design that offers fresh appeal in this sector. It’s classy, sporty – and mean.
Luxurious
Range Rover have really splashed out here. This Evoque convertible comes with an upgraded 2016 interior that includes lashings of leather, metal and high-quality plastics, and also premieres the brand’s new 10.2” InControl Touch Pro infotainment system.Three-Door Lacks Practicality
There is both a three-door and a five-door variant available, but the latter is guilty of putting far too much style before enough practicality.
Questionable Reliability
You need your crossover convertible’s to be durable and robust, and while OSV didn’t come across any rattles and squeaks during our test drive, the car came 89h in CarBuyer’s Driver Power customer satisfaction poll earlier this year. That is distinctly average. Worse still, it came 114th for reliability.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
Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible vs. Audi A5 Cabriolet vs. BMW 4 Series Convertible
The Evoque is a solid enough proposition, but for argument’s sake, let’s see how it measures up against its rivals in the comparison section of our Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible review.
Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible vs. Audi A5 Cabriolet
The new Audi A5 Cabriolet has replaced the outgoing A4. It’s a much more upmarket car, and, rather unusually, comes with a fabric roof. This saves boot space, as well as keeps weight down.
Although it isn’t the best car to drive in this sector (the Evoque is better), the A5 convertible is at least straightforward enough to drive. The controls are responsive and positive, the steering is nice and light, while the Drive Select system lets you adjust the comfort and steering until you’re happy.[vc_single_image image=”44745″ img_size=”article-image”]The ride is a bit too firm for our liking, especially when you pair the car up with larger wheels, but the engines are powerful enough. A 3.0-litre diesel can get you from rest to 62mph in 6.3 seconds, while the fastest petrol covers the same distance in 7.4 seconds.
Altogether, there are six engines to choose from, including four diesels and a pair of petrols. All of them offer impressive fuel economy, with the most frugal diesel in the range capable returning 57.6mpg. Like the petrol in the Range Rover, the ones here are unsurprisingly inefficient, with returns of 45.6mpg the best you can hope for.The interior is pretty much what you’d expect from a premium Audi. The materials used are of high quality, the design is both stylish and functional, and overall build quality is top notch. The cabin isn’t as classy as the Evoque’s, and it is starting to show its age. For a fresher interior, the Range Rover is your best bet. Practicality is no better than decent, and the boot measures 380-litres.
Price:
Land Rover – £31,000 – £60,000
Audi A5 – £35,500 – £47,000
Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible vs BMW 4 Series Convertible
The new BMW 4 Series Convertible is the drop-top variant of the popular 4 Series Coupe. It comes with a folding metal roof, plenty of on the road thrills and spills, and it’s easily one of the most practical cars of its type.
Owing to the roof, the BMW is quite a hefty machine, and this does weaken performance somewhat. It isn’t anything remotely like a desirable sports car but is more of a comfortable cruiser. Acceleration, though, is still impressive and it’s a quicker car than the Evoque. The 428i model guns from standstill to 62mph in 6.2 seconds, while the 3.0-litre petrol unit covers the same distance in just 5.5 seconds before maxing out at 155mph.The dazzling figures produced by the range-topping petrol aren’t quite matched by its fuel economy, however. It can achieve returns of around 30mpg off a sensible drive. The diesels fare better, with the most economical of them all capable of returning 58.8mpg in fuel economy.
The interior is inspired by the coupe from which it’s derived. This means a solidly built dashboard that comes complete with the brand’s brilliant iDrive infotainment system, as well as an adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel. Exterior noise is kept to a minimum, while in terms of practicality the convertible can almost rival the coupe. Space up front is good while accessing the rear seats is fairly easy. The boot, meanwhile, is size at 370-litres.[vc_single_image image=”44746″ img_size=”article-image”]The BMW 4 Series convertible is a super reliable machine and came 9th in CarBuyer’s Drive Power owner satisfaction survey.
Price:
BMW – £35,000 – £50,000
Verdict Of Our Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible Review
The Evoque cabriolet is certainly not going to be to everyone’s tastes, but its a pioneer in its field. Offering something vastly different from the competition, it’s a crossover convertible that actually manages to look stylish.
Although the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible isn’t the complete SUV or the complete convertible, it takes enough from both to be a hugely desirable and satisfying machine.
