We’ve seen some big and important announcements from Peugeot 2012.

Firstly, their Onyx concept car. The amazing car made use of unprocessed materials in new ways. This breaks down into a body has been hand-finished using pure copper sheet metal, and because it’s untreated, the finish will change over the course of time, giving it a new look. The bodywork panels are made from carbon fibre. The windows and the roof are made from PolyMethylMethAcrylate (PMMA) Shatter resistant plastic to you and I. Carbon chassis and carbon fibre flooring. The interior is constructed from compressed and stretched felt and the dash is made from wood produced from recycled newspapers. All in all the entire car weights just 1,100kg.

To match the impressive design we have some impressive engineering, this car has 3.7-litre V8 hybrid HDi FAP engine that was used for the Peugeot 2012 Le Mans programme, here developing some 600bhp transmitted to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox and finally, KERS-style brake energy harvesting delivers an extra 80hp under acceleration, via lithium ion battery-powered electric motor.

The aim of this car is to showcase a new design direction for Peugeot 2012, which may eventually filter through into road cars, plus display some of the new materials and techniques Peugeot’s been working on. We seriously hope so as the effort that has gone into this car is too good to waste!

Speaking of Peugeot 2012, they have also given a facelift to the RCZ and have announced a RCZ- Peugeot 2012 is increasing the appeal and exclusivity of its popular RCZ Sports Coupé. Sensuous and sleek, sporty and elegant, its new style promotes its power and fluidity, strength and refinement, and affirms its distinctive singularity in the Peugeot range.

The rejuvenation of the RCZ can be seen first of all through its style. From the initial sketches, the intention was to give this new RCZ a modern style, even more exclusive and unique than the current range.

A completely new front face, sporty and flowing, fully emphasises the power of its rear wings and the sensuous curves of its ‘double-bubble’ roof. This new synergy between the front and rear gives the bodywork an entirely new expression. The central air intake, now subtle and elegant, is enlivened by two satin chrome bars and provides the effect of strength and refinement.

Striving to be at the top of this exclusive, dynamic and sporty range, the ‘RCZ R Concept’ is unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. In a matt black and copper livery it echoes another Concept Car unveiled at the show: the ‘Onyx’ supercar.

The ‘RCZ R Concept’ previews a future version of enhanced sportiness, which will be introduced to the range at the end of 2013.

The Peugeot Sport and PSA Group Development teams are working together to adapt technology originating from the world of motor sport to make a production ready vehicle and once again turn a dream into reality.

Its new 1.6-litre THP 260bhp engine will make it the most powerful production model in Peugeot’s history. A specific power of more than 160bhp/litre, among the highest in the world for a production vehicle, and CO₂ emissions of approximately 155g/km, positions it in a range of new high efficiency. Coherent with this engine, special suspension and wheels combined with a Torsen® limited slip differential promise dynamic and effective sensations of a very high level.

Another announcement today came from Nissan who will be premiering its TeRRA new zero emission SUV concept at Paris Motor Show

The SUV is to be unveiled on 27^th September at the Motor Show and it will combine two outstanding Nissan strengths – SUVs and EVs – in a vehicle that is equally in its element off-road or gliding silently through the city. With an innovative 4×4 fuel-cell electric powertrain and an athletic exterior that has presence beyond its compact dimensions, TeRRA takes sustainable motoring into exciting new territory.

A final not on Peugeot 2012, a little technology news that will interest the auto world.

Google, the company who provides its 500 million users with any type of information they desire has added a car insurance comparison site that is based on policy and not on price like its competitors.

Last year Google bought BeatThatQuote.com for almost £38m and since then has been working to develop a price comparison tool that it says goes ‘above and beyond’ addressing concerns surrounding transparency, trust and consumer privacy.

Google says it specifically set out to try and address as many consumer concerns while developing its new price comparison tool which doesn’t have a name but can be accessed by typing ‘compare car insurance’ into the search engine.

John Paleomylites, Google’s price comparison product director, said: ‘We want to help consumers find the best car insurance in the fastest and most honest way possible while completely respecting their privacy.’

Google has more than 120 insurers on its panel with plans to increase that number further in the near future, although it acknowledges it is unlikely to get all Which? Recommended Providers on board.

While it does not cover the whole of the market, Google does make that clear on its site. The company is in talks with insurers that do not appear on price comparison sites about the possibility of listing them in a bid to encourage consumers to shop around.

Rather than making assumptions during the quote-generating process, Google’s price comparison tool requires the consumer to actively select options relating to their vehicle, personal details and policy requirements. That, Google says, should ensure the quotes retrieved are not just based on the cheapest but are for relevant policies that will allow consumers to make a valid claim.

It’s no surprise that Google have chosen to venture into the auto trade and I think that their approach is refreshing. Do you think it will sink or swim?
