Motoring into a Dream Career – OSV Reveal the Top Global Jobs for Those with Oil in Their Veins

From £27k to £40m – the car industry offers salaries not to be sniffed at. Excitement beckons for Supercar Test Drivers, Stunt Car Drivers and Engineers alike. Car Sales experts can earn two to three times the UK average salary.

Supercar Test Driver. F1 Engineer. Mechanic. Stunt Car Driver. Auto Journalist or Reporter.
With GCSEs and A-Levels just around the corner and degree results out soon, students everywhere are turning their minds to potential careers, but just what jobs are available for those who love cars but don’t fancy a life on the race track? New research by OSV has revealed that there’s more out there for people with oil in their veins than just being the star of the driving show.

Vehicle-related jobs are broadly separated into four categories – driving, technical, academic and management – with potential earnings ranging from a perfectly acceptable £27,000p/a for a private chauffeur, to an astronomical £40m, if you happen to be a budding Fernando Alonso, with numerous pit stops in between.
But of course, finding a career isn’t just about the money; ideally, you should find something you enjoy doing, so what vacancies could a would-be driver look for, which could take them away from the taxi rank?

Factory Test Drivers get to play with… ahem, rigorously check new vehicles for safety, comfort and ease of use, for roughly £30,000 per annum, while a Supercar Test Driver can pretend that they are a star in a very expensive car every working day for an appealing £75,000p/a salary. Fancy driving some of the most expensive and fastest cars in the world, and getting paid for it? Then a Supercar Collection and Delivery Driver (£30,000p/a) role might be for you.

For the thrill-seeker, there’s Stunt Car Driving within the film industry (£4,000-£200,000 depending on skill and experience). Or for the real risk-taker, War Zone Truck Driver (£60,000-80,000) might bring its own rewards.

Working tirelessly behind the scenes the tech guys and girls are the real heart of the motor industry, filling more than just the role of mechanic:
With vacancies in Ontario for the Ford GT, Japan for the Acura, Hungary for the Lamborghini & Audi R8, and Surrey for the McLaren P1, the Supercar Engine Builder (£35,000) is in high global demand.

An F1 engineer can expect to command up to a £75k salary and work anywhere around the world: supercar engine plants in the UK alone include Lotus, Williams, Mercedes, Red Bull, Silverstone and Marussia. Or how about a designer (£50k), F1 mechanic (£35k), or Prototype Testing Engineer (£60k)

For the more academically minded, there’s the possibility of becoming an auto journalist, earning a salary of around £30,000, while if you fancy yourself as the next Jeremy Clarkson you could aspire to the heady heights of £9.6million a year.

Last, but by no means least, is the management side. Whether a Car Sales Manager, Marketing Manager, or Group Used Car Manager, you could spend your days working with the things you love, while earning between £50,000-£100,000p/a; when the national average salary is £27,600, that’s more than enough to power an extremely comfortable lifestyle.

Joint Director at OSV, Debbie Kirkley comments: “‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,’ said Confucius. No school or college careers advisor is going to recommend that a student set their heart on competing with Lewis Hamilton for a living, but there are so many more exciting car-related jobs out there.

‘Whether you want to be behind the wheel, under the bonnet, or even running your own Company like Andrew and me – there’s a car career out there for anyone with an interest. You just have to set your goals and then go for it!’[vc_btn title=”Download Infographic Here” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.osv.ltd.uk%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2017%2F06%2FOSV-Car-Jobs-Infographic-1.png|title:Download%20Infographic%20Here|target:%20_blank|”]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
