Video Review of the Land Rover Discovery

Hello and welcome to another OSV car review. Today, we’re driving the 2017 Land Rover Discovery. The all new Discovery feels really very good. You can tell that Land Rover has got its SUV refinement nailed down. And with the standard eight-speed automatic gear box swapping cogs for you, it feels ever so relaxing to drive.

Well, this is the brand new Land Rover Discovery. This is the HSE Luxury edition that I’m test driving today. Naught to 60 arrives in 7.7 seconds, and you can expect to get 39 to the gallon out of this. It’s relaxing, it’s easy, I don’t feel stressed whatsoever. When you first start the car up, though, there is that usual agricultural clatter of the diesel engine. But it disappears very soon when you pull away, and it all seems crisper and not at all lazy. It’s very light on its toes, this new Discovery, actually. The steering is absolutely transformed over the other one, as well. It’s gone from that slow, heavy, spongy feel to a very light, direct and responsive action. The whole thing feels much, much, much more accurate than the 2.2 ton beast this car actually is.

The Discovery has got an eight-speed automatic gear box. The car itself also weighs 2.2 tons, and it’s capable of towing three and a half tons. That just goes to show you what a beast this thing really is. It’s a monocoque design, so it should feel much lighter and sharper on the road. And you know what? I’ve been sitting behind this wheel for a while now, driving through some of the dual carriageways, over a few of the country lanes in the U.K., and I’ve got to say this does not feel like a 2.1, 2.2 ton vehicle. It’s an amazing feat that Land Rover has done to make it feel so alive and lithe.

Inside the cabin there is an abundance of space, and the overall quality is absolutely superb, exactly what you’d expect of a modern Land Rover. SE trim gets you navigation, leather seats, LED headlights, parking sensors, Land Rover’s InControl touchscreen system and a stereo upgrade.

Now, this might sound like a daft question but is the new Land Rover Discovery big inside? Yes, would be the answer to that. This is a full-sized, seven-seater SUV. And when I mean full-sized, I mean it. This car…you’ve only got these seats up at the moment, but there’s another two here that will pop up and two adults will sit there quite happily. Three adults will sit here very happily. And obviously, the driver and the passenger have got acres of room, too. At the end of the day, this car also hasn’t just got amazing leg room. I don’t know if you can see from there. Look at all this room I’ve got. But the headroom is great, too. You’ve got a sunroof. You’ve got another sunroof here, so that lets in lots of light. So, even though we’ve got a dark leather interior right now, it feels very, very airy. It’s a very nice place to be. You’ve also got all sorts of technical toys that will keep you happy. You’ve got screens in the back of the headrests and you can see the navigation, the climate, the media. You can heat your own seats, as well. So, there’s a lot of luxury, and so there should be on this particular car. After all, strangely enough, the model we’re in is called the HSE Luxury model.

You’ll see here that we drop this, got enough room for a picnic basket. Even with the sixth seat up, the seventh seat is here in the floor. And I thought if I climb in here, look, quite pleasantly. Okay, it’s a bit of a squeeze and a rather unorthodox way of entering this third row of seats, but it can still be done. Really, at the end of the day, you’ve got all the comfort you want back here, as much as you have in the front. You’ve got heated seats, look. And I’m still…bearing in mind I’m six foot tall, yes, it’s not gonna be the most comfortable journey, necessarily, all the way back here, but it’s still very doable.

Well, there you go, another OSV car review. This was the 2017 Land Rover Discovery.
