Lotus Evora Review

Whereas its stablemate, the Elise, is still struggling with downmarket materials, the Lotus Evora is targeting a much more sophisticated clientele with its swish interior and tidy, beautifully proportioned 2+2 layout. Unlike other models in the Lotus range, this car wants image and quality to have an equal footing alongside performance and handling. Let’s take a closer look at what it offers.

Muscular Engine

The Lotus Evora borrows its engines from Toyota, just like its Elise stablemate. But unlike its zippier mate, the Lotus Evora makes use of a 3.5-litre V6 unit that has also been used by the powerful Lexus RX350. It might be surprising to some that Lotus have decided to implement such a hefty engine, but it has been modified so that it caters for Lotus’s demographic.

This means a sharper throttle response, as well as enhanced efficiency and flexibility. Overall, it’s just a bit edgier than the package used by the Lexus, and generates 276bhp, as well as 340Nm of torque. It’s certainly muscular, but it’s also quick, rocketing the Lotus Evora to 60mph from rest in 5 seconds. If you opt for the even quicker Lotus Evora S model, you’ll benefit from a supercharged 345bhp variant.

Stunning Shape

Car designers love a challenge, and the new Lotus Evora certainly presented one: how do you retain the car’s classic exterior whilst implementing the 2+2 configuration? Proportion was everything, and thankfully the Lotus engineers got it spot on with an exterior that is confident and taut. As always, aluminium informs much of the architecture, thereby reducing weight whilst promoting rigidity. The car is also just 275mm lengthier than an Elise, cleverly mounting its V6 engine along with back seats that – allegedly – can accommodate adult passengers of a fair size.

Boot-size is no bigger than you probably expect from a Lotus Evora, offering a capacity of 160-litres. That said, the actual interior itself gives the impression of being roomy, whilst the front seats were deliberately designed to accommodate passengers of up to 6’5” in height. Legroom is also pretty good whilst getting in and out is certainly less cumbersome than it is in an Elise. The build quality is much more generous than what Lotus have become famed for, with the cabin getting a much plusher treatment than usual, the leather trimmed fascia a notable high point.

Facts and Figures

The Lotus Evora price tag starts at £53,000, and rises to about £66,000. If you want to pick up a used Lotus Evora, the prices will start a little lower. Standard specs are pretty good across the range, with the pick being bi-xenon headlamps, whilst extras include a 7-inch touchscreen which comes with satellite navigation functions, whilst, if you opt for the Premium pack, you’ll be rewarded with a leather trimmed cabin, as well as “special” extra colours. As always with a Lotus, the innovative lightweight design continues to be efficient, with fuel consumption figures around 30mpg, whilst the Lotus Evora emits 205g/km of CO2.

Final Thoughts

The UK brand at last want to target a much more upmarket clientele, and the Lotus Evora is their way of doing so. To do this, the brand had to add build quality and a refined design to their usual qualities of handling, speed and performance. They did, and what’s more they also fitted in a 2+2 configuration that’s spacious and leaves room for a very usable boot. The latest Lotus Evora news is that this car has its moments of sheer brilliance, its undoubted ability surely enough to shake up the sports coupe sector.
