The new 2014 Fiat 500L Review [Video]

The 2014 Fiat 500L see’s the car grow – in more ways than one. The brand has recognised that, whilst its name will always be associated with small cars, the market is changing and, with it, so must the brand – and particularly the Fiat 500L 2014. The car is now bigger to deal with consumer needs, making it a very practical Fiat 500L MPV; it has a touch more flair, keeping in mind the 500’s long standing appeal to city-based retro lovers and urbanistas; and it comes with more accessories than ever before. Yes, it’s still small and will still be classed as a compact five-seater, but it’s more spacious, bolder and more appealing to those consumers who have been crying out for the 500L to get with the times. Let’s take a closer look.

Perky

The 2014 Fiat 500L MPV is one of the more spirited compact MPV’s on the market at present, with a lock-to-lock steering that gives you confidence behind the wheel, as well as controlled bodyroll and a good amount of torque. The figures aren’t all that becoming in and out of themselves, with the 85bhp 1.3-litre diesel variant being a popular choice among consumers. The numbers don’t really stack up in comparison to, say, a mid-sized people carrier, but the experience you get behind the wheel actually suggests the numbers are simply an illusion. It’s perky and responsive, if not the fastest or keenest of them all.

But then again, consumers won’t necessarily be buying the 2014 Fiat 500L for the mettle it offers. But if you invest in, say, the 0.9-litre 2 cylinder TwinAir petrol variant, you clock numbers of 62mph from rest in 11 seconds, with a top speed of 112mph, meaning the Fiat 500L motability is actually pretty competitive if you can stretch the old funds a little. Another, slightly meatier variant is the 1.6-litre Multijet II turbo-diesel, which gives you a 120bhp power plant.

Bigger

The 2014 Fiat 500L certainly is bigger than its 500 citycar counterpart, but this isn’t to suggest that it’s glaringly bulkier. The 2014 Fiat 500L isn’t testosterone driven or pumped-up, primed for back road action. In terms of looks, what you get is something very similar to the atypical 500 design, but with 60cm more length and 18cm more height, it now competes with the Fiat Bravo for width, whilst outing the Punto supermini for length.

There isn’t really that much of a touch of class or elegance added either; sure, you get the usual Italian splashing’s of flair, and there are some neat embellishments, such as the wraparound windscreen. But the real focus here is the size. This is a compact 2014 Fiat 500L MVP, yet the space it offers inside suggests there is nothing compact about it. Three adults can fit into the rear without complaining they can’t breathe, and you also get 340-litres of space in the boot. Up front, you’ll be met with a dashboard that comes in five different shades – or just a fantastic suede trim.

Final Thoughts

The Fiat 500L offers start at £15,000 and rising to £19,000, with used Fiat 500L deals typically a little cheaper. You’ll have to pay a premium of £1,500 to get a better engine than the parched 1.4-litre TwinAir petrol, but it would arguably be money well spent. The 1.3-litre Multijet diesel, for example, offers 67.3mpg and if you went for the Fiat automatic gearbox for this particular variant, you will see those numbers increase to 70.6mpg. If emissions are more your concern, the green-minded 1.6-litre Multijet diesel emits 117g/km of CO2.

There is also the option of a 2014 Fiat 500L convertible, as the opening roof is optional. In fact, there are over 100 accessories you can add to your 2014 Fiat 500L, and we have to say that we haven’t come across a compact MPV that offers so much personalisation as this one. There are an array of body shades to choose from which you can then contrast with different wheel finishes. So, whilst this Fiat 500L MPV is aimed at the family, there is something refreshing about this car that gives it the chance to open up to a whole new market. It’s inventive, creative, spacious, curvaceous, practical and, above all – fun.
