Vauxhall ADAM Review

[vc_single_image image=”47144″ img_size=”article-image”]BMW’s Mini seems to be everywhere you look in suburbia, whether parked up on drives or cruising through your street, but the Vauxhall ADAM wants to offer a more stylish, individualistic alternative for anyone who is bored of following the crowd. It’s not meant to rival Vauxhall’s popular city car or supermini’s, but instead it’s designed to just bring something a little fresh to the small car sector.

The something fresh and individualistic is the fact that you can personalise your Vauxhall ADAM to the extent that there would be a million to one chance of a Vauxhall Adam identical to yours on the road. This is because the company are offering over a million different Vauxhall ADAM spec offers and trim combinations which is fairly mind-blowing and staggeringly different to say the least. Okay, so underneath all this inventive personalisation is a third generation Vauxhall Corsa at heart. But this is no bad thing. Let’s take a closer look.[vc_single_image image=”47141″ img_size=”article-image”]

Drive Appeal

Despite the underpinnings of a Corsa, the cockpit, at least, is different. You occupy a more authoritative driving position, with a huge steering wheel and a low glass area. It has a real sporty feel to it, a real dynamic flavouring. But perhaps this is where differences between the two end, with the drivability remarkably similar to that offered by the somewhat clumpy third generation Corsa. The Vauxhall ADAM weighs 1.1 tonnes, and the bottom of the range 1.2-litre 16v engine doesn’t have the easiest task of lugging it up and down the road.

It’s at this point that you simply have to accept that the overriding appeal of the Vauxhall ADAM lies with its looks and individuality. It’s fashionable, if not the most powerful. Still, there is the option of splashing a bit more cash on the 100PS petrol engine that reaches 62mph in a nifty 11.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 115mph.

Size Matters

At under 3.7m in length, the 2013 Vauxhall ADAM is actually 300mm shorter than the Corsa supermini, and shorter than a lot of citycars; but this shouldn’t be a reason to put consumers off. It has more height than some of its rivals, and more width than the Corsa, which is a real coup for Vauxhall as, visually at least, it has the advantage of appearing to be bigger than it actually is. Clever designing? Perhaps.

But, naturally, consumers want actual space as opposed to the illusion of space. The dimensions may aid its looks, thereby expanding its appeal to fashionists, but the Vauxhall ADAM needs to offer practicality too. Well, because of its height, it does feel more spacious inside. But, again, we’re talking more about feelings and illusions than actualities. The reality is that squeezing four adults into a 2013 Vauxhall ADAM might be easier in theory than in execution. The boot offers you 170-litres of space, which is actually more than that found in a rival Fiat 500.

If space is not an issue for you, you’ll be ready to embellish your Vauxhall ADAM according to your whims. Trim choice means you can be as understated or as brash and extravagant as you like. As they say, clothes make the man, and with the Vauxhall spec offers, you have a car that you can tailor to your personality.[vc_single_image image=”47142″ img_size=”article-image”]

Final Thoughts

The new Vauxhall ADAM offers start at £11,000, with a few extra hundred added on top getting you the more competent 1.4-litre petrol engine. Anything lower, such as the 1.2-litre variant, will probably feel a little too feeble. There are three trim levels to choose from, including fashionable, elegant and sportier. The Vauxhall ADAM specification deals include as standard – low rolling resistance tyres and a green-minded start/stop system that can slash your CO2 figures by about 5%.

Whether you opt for a Vauxhall ADAM will probably depend on whether you put size before style or vice versa. It’s certainly a trendsetter in the sense that it can be personalised in a million ways, but critics might snipe that this is merely to cover up the cracks – ergo, the lack of space. Still, with a boot that is actually larger than a Fiat 500, and a design that makes it look bigger than it is, there might not be too many complaints. With an affordable Vauxhall ADAM price tag, it might be worth a good look.
