The driverless car sector has been hotting up in recent months. Google are paying workers $20 to “test drive” their latest inventions, while Ford have been busy implementing drive-in-the-dark technology in their vehicles.
But while we’re all well aware of who the major players are in this intriguing market, one name has so far stayed well beneath the surface.
Zoox is a Silicon Valley startup company that is busy developing its own autonomous cars to rival Google, Apple, Ford et al.
And to prove that it’s about to become a big noise in this sector, it’s just received over $1 billion of capital in a recent funding round – which is pretty much the same amount that General Motors received earlier in May.
Secretive Zoox
The guys behind Zoox have been tight-lipped about their plans and ideas so far, and have said very little to the general public.
But behind closed doors, the elusive startup is working on technology that is similar to that used by Google in their own autonomous vehicles.
Zoox were able to get their hands on the innovative technology thanks largely to the recent round of funding, where investors were convinced that this is a startup with a bright future.
Why Haven’t We Heard Of Zoox Before?
Zoox are extremely secretive and are quietly going about their business.
Miles behind Google and Ford in their stage of development, Zoox only first started testing autonomous vehicles in March earlier this year, becoming the 12th company to receive permission to test drive autonomous cars in the state of California.
But while their competitors are further down the road, Zoox believe they will play a key role in refining autonomous tech.
According to the secretive startup: “Zoox is developing fully autonomous vehicles and the supporting ecosystem required to bring the technology to market at scale.
“Sitting at the intersection of robotics, machine learning and design, Zoox aims to provide the next generation of mobility-as-service in urban environments.”
