The Mito is Alfa Romeo’s smallest car. It’s visually compelling, easily identifiable as one of the Italians’ creations, and comfortable to ride around in. It’s also reasonably priced, and can boast low running costs.

On The Road
Unfortunately, we expected an Alfa Romeo to drive better, even if it is their smallest model. All trims get the brands DNA system (you get to switch between Dynamic, Normal, and All Weather), but while this tweaks the steering response and engine power somewhat, it doesn’t help all that much with drivability. Compared to its rivals, the Mito just isn’t as exciting as you’d hope.
With that said, for its limitations the DNA system still has enough to make something of a mark. The accelerator can be made more reactive, while the steering can be made heavier. However, switching through the modes feels like an awful lot of effort to get this car up to scratch with the likes of the MINI.[vc_single_image image=”47932″ img_size=”article-image”]The quickest petrol engine in the range is a 170bhp 1.4-litre unit that takes 7.3 seconds to get you from a rest to 62mph. It would benefit from a bit more power, while its automatic transmission is a bit of a let-down. It’s also fairly highly priced.
The 135bhp is slower but cheaper. It also comes paired up with the jarring automatic box but is easier to recommend thanks to a solid amount of performance, that’s enough for this nippy little hatchback. A 77bhp variant is a lot harder to recommend.
There is the option of a more affordable 0.9-litre TwinAir petrol which takes 11.4 seconds to cover the 0-62mph dash, but lets you rev it hard and works well at low speed. It’s somewhat gruff noise seems at odds with an Alfa Romeo, though.
The diesel engines are equally no-frills. A 1.3-litre is the cheapest to run, but it can only deliver 84bhp which just doesn’t seem enough, even for a small hatchback like the 2016 Mito. A 1.6-litre diesel does 0-62mph in 10.9 seconds thanks to 120bhp, and it’s a very competent over-taker. It comes with a six-speed manual ‘box, but is a bit unrefined.
Interior, Design & Build

The dash has been freshened up, while better plastics are used this time, but you get the impression that the cabin is the handiwork of two separate design teams who each had their own ideas. It’s a bit muddled.
Fitment is also questionable and not becoming of an Alfa Romeo. Ride quality is decent, especially if you add the adjustable active suspension. Rear visibility, however, could be better.The exterior is stylish enough and the Mito certainly lives up to the Alfa Romeo name in this regard. Although despite the addition of chrome-ringed dials, circular air vents and textured dash materials, the interior on the whole is a let-down. There is simply too much poor quality material and a lack of cohesion.
Another area where the Mito doesn’t excel is practicality. Thankfully, the two rear seats are usable – though only just. Accessing them is tricky, and we don’t suggest you keep passengers in there for too long.
Upfront, things are a lot better. What lets things down is the lack of a good amount of storage areas. The small glovebox is disappointing and the Mito might not be able to cope very well with what a small family can throw at it. Things may soon get messy.
The boot measures 270-litres in what is a rare positive. Again, though, there is a caveat and it comes in the form of a low boot floor that will make loading difficult – especially when you factor in the high lip.
Equipment
If you thought there was a lack of effort and imagination when it came to the interior, check this out – the entry level trim is called Mito. It comes with 16” alloys, air conditioning, the brand’s DNA switch, satin chrome exterior detailing and a rear spoiler. Standard kit, then, is good. However, some engines are unavailable.
The Super trim adds 17” alloys, cruise control, special upholstery and an alarm, while the Speciale line gets 17” darkened alloys, sports dials, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, red brake callipers, and tinted rear glass.
The range-topping Veloce model – which is the only model to come with all the engines – adds 18” alloys, high-performance Brembo brakes and adjustable active suspension.[vc_single_image image=”47933″ img_size=”article-image”]
Costs of the Alfa Romeo Mito

Used values are not fantastic but the Italian brand has worked hard at reducing emissions, while improving fuel economy. The results are pleasing and there are some engines that are free to tax.
The thirstiest engine isn’t exactly expensive to run. A 1.4-litre 168bhp petrol unit, it posts returns of 52.3mpg and costs £105 a year in road tax. The cheapest model in the range, conversely, is the 1.3-litre diesel power plant that’s good for 80.7mpg. It’s also exempt from road tax. In terms of actual ownership, the 1.4-litre 77bhp is the cheapest. However, it incurs a road tax bill of over £100, while average fuel economy returns of 50.4mpg are not fantastic.

Alfa Romeo Mito vs Ford Fiesta Hatchback
The new Ford Fiesta Hatchback is the best-selling car in Britain – and for good reason. It’s entertaining to drive, looks great, and doesn’t cost too much to buy.
When it comes to out-and-out fun, the Mito can’t match the Fiesta, a small hatchback that is nimble, agile, and which connects well to the road. Visibility is sound, the controls are easy to use, and the ride quality is smooth.
You have to be very careful when picking your engine though, as the range has a few duds. The 1.25 and 1.6-litre petrols, for example, are underwhelming and don’t suit the car at all. The pair of 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engines are a much better option. Available in either 98 or 123bhp guise, both are eager, quiet and have plenty of punch. The most powerful of the two is even what you’d call quick and can get from rest to 62mph in 9.4 seconds.
However, if it’s pure pace that you want, a 138bhp EcoBoost engine is the fastest in the standard range.[vc_single_image image=”47941″ img_size=”article-image”]Only one diesel engine is available – a 1.5-litre TDCi unit that comes in either 72bhp or 93bhp form. Both are reasonably well performing, but it’s their economy that catches the eye. Both are capable of achieving fuel economy returns of 88mpg, which is a grandstand figure. They’re also exempt from road tax.
However, the petrol engines will be the most popular because the Fiesta is usually snapped up by people who make regular short journeys. Some of the petrol models qualify for free road tax and fuel economy returns are generally reasonable.[vc_single_image image=”47936″ img_size=”article-image”]The new-look exterior is impressive and the Fiesta has never looked so edgy. Inside, this new direction the brand is heading in continues. The sweeping dash gets a smart new infotainment system and centrally mounted screen, while soft-touch plastics are largely the order of the day.
Practicality is not something the Fiesta excels on – but few cars in this sector do. Dimensions are pretty much on par with the Alfa Romeo’s, which means that, while it’s easy to park and manoeuvre through tight spaces, rear head and legroom is a bit cramped. There are plenty of handy storage spaces knocking around though, while the well-shaped boot measures a reasonable, 290-litres.Price:

Alfa Romeo Mito vs MINI Hatchback
The new MINI Hatchback is as personable as ever. It doesn’t cost much to run and is as great fun to drive.
Either a small hatchback is bags of fun to drive or it’s no fun at all. The Mito falls into the latter category, while the MINI very much falls into the former.
Characterful and lively, it’s a pleasure to take this compact hatch out onto the road. It actually feels more grown-up this time around and it’s definitely more usable – but MINI hasn’t curtailed its more mischievous elements one iota. It’s a hatchback to get your kicks to.[vc_single_image image=”47940″ img_size=”article-image”]Five engines make up the range, including a trio of petrol engines that start with a 1.2-litre 100bhp three-pot turbo. The quickest engine is a 2.0-litre four-pot that powers the Cooper S. It delivers 189bhp and can get you from rest to 62mph in just 6.8 seconds.
The diesel engines are smaller. They’re both 1.5-litre units and deliver 94 and 115bhp respectively. Performance is good, but they are a bit noisy and coarse. However, they are economical and running costs is one area where the MINI really excels. The cheapest diesel in the line-up averages fuel economy returns of 83.1mpg and doesn’t cost anything in road tax.
Even the petrol models are cheap to run, with the 1.2-litre turbocharged unit good for 61.4mpg.[vc_single_image image=”47938″ img_size=”article-image”]The MINI’s interior is better built than ever. There’s a great sense of maturity in here these days but you still get to sit nice and low. The steering wheel and driver’s seat offer plenty of adjustment and you don’t feel as hemmed in as you did in previous models. The dash is familiar but now possesses more quality and a new infotainment screen has replaced the central speedometer.Like the Alfa Romeo and Fiesta, the 2016 MINI Hatchback is limited as to what it can offer in terms of practicality by its small dimensions. It’s not as cramped as it used to be, but it’s not what you’d call spacious. Accessing the rear seats is actually easy, but sitting in them for over 30 minutes isn’t. Kids, however, will be just fine in the back. There are plenty of storage areas here and there, but the 211-litre boot is just too small.

Verdict of our Alfa Romeo Mito Review
There is no doubt that this car has its flaws. But it still has a lot going for it, including desirability, above average looks and plenty of pace. It’s also nimble and boasts a good selection of engines.
