On The Road
If you’re a keen driving enthusiast who loves an epic engine sound, you’ll be pleased to learn that the 5.9-litre V12 565bhp engine is always on song and sounds every inch like a beastly supercar. Its also an excellent cruiser, and even at 100mph the rev counter continues to display a figure beginning with the number 2. You could drive it across the entire country, and neither you nor the car will need to break a sweat.
The problem is that, while it sounds very much like a supercar, it doesn’t really feel like one. Aston insists that only the engine management system differentiates this car’s V12 engine from the one in the Vantage S, but we get the impression that there is more to it.[vc_single_image image=”44707″ img_size=”article-image”]Moreover, while it can cover the 0-62mph sprint in 4.1 seconds, it doesn’t actually feel that quick. Even when you turn on the Sports setting for enhanced throttle response and higher revs, you never feel like you’re rocketing along in a rapid sports car. It just never seems to reach boiling point.
The stiffness has improved, though, especially at higher speeds. Torsional rigidity has been increased by 14% over the DBS Volante, which is partly down to the use of aerospace technology. Take the car onto some of our worst road surfaces, however, and it will wobble fairly noticeably. But overall, there can’t be many complaints about ride quality. For such a hefty convertible, it rides well.[vc_single_image image=”44706″ img_size=”article-image”]Handling is not so good. It’s predictable, which is probably the most damning thing you can say about an open-top supercar. Involvement is pretty much non-existent, both in the handling and the steering.
You do get more involved when you reach nine or ten-tenths. Set the adaptive damping to Track or Sport and your grin should grow as wide as the Cheshire Cat’s, as the car transforms from predictable into a better super car than even a GT.
Interior, Design & Build
The new car looks even showier from the outside than it did last time around. It’s treated to a gorgeous carbon-fibre body and makes use of the materials for its underpinnings. It’s easily the best looking Aston Martin on the market today – which is really saying something. If you want to steal the show, this is the one for you.
The roof is cleverly stored, which means you only lose 89-litres of the coupe’s boot space – it could have been worse. This means the boot measures 279-litres, and it remains the same whether the roof is up or down. 279-litres is 50% more than the DBS Volante can offer.As soon as you can prise your eyes away from the compelling exterior, pop inside and feast them on the timeless glass key, the same one which is also found in the Vanquish. The centre console is inspired by the aesthetics of a waterfall. While this sounds intriguing and elegant, it doesn’t quite have the quality you’d expect of a £200,000 car.
But this is now a common criticism of Aston Martins: the interiors are starting to feel dated. Everything is well laid out and well made, and the infotainment is very usable and has everything you need, including satellite navigation and audio controls. Costs Of The Aston Martin Vanquish Convertible
Prices for the new car start out from £199,995, which makes it the most expensive Aston Martin on the market today. If you want to lease the car, the cheapest deal you could get would be around £4,500 + VAT per month, but the deals could go as high as £8,000 + VAT a month. No one spends £200,000 on a supercar and expects it to offer good running costs, and it won’t surprise you to read that the new convertible can only achieve fuel economy returns of 19.6mpg – at best. If you push the car to its limits, you’ll be looking at averaging mid-teens. Emissions, meanwhile, stand at 335g/km of CO2.
In terms of its VED band, you will have to pay out £1,065 in the first year and then a further £490 each year after that.

Bespoke Feel
Sure, the cabin doesn’t look as contemporary as many of its rivals, but you can’t argue with the timeless, bespoke quality that runs right through the interior.
It’s Practical
This is a very usable super-car convertible. Visibility is good, there is 50% more luggage space than there is in the cheaper DBS Volante, and the decently-sized boot is usefully wide.
Good Refinement
Refinement is nothing short of first class here. The V12 engine makes the right sort of barks and hisses, and you might even find yourself crowing for more of it.
With the roof down, there is more noise, of course. But with the roof up, the cabin is pleasantly serene.
Doesn’t Feel Quick
Covering 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds is no mean feat, but the car never feels as quick as those numbers would suggest. For more brutal acceleration, the Vantage S is a better option.
Silly Price
You know you’re getting into the realms of silly money when a supercar costs almost £50,000 more than a Ferrari. The new Bentley Continental GTC Convertible is smart to look at, good to drive – and super fast.
There aren’t really any slow models in the Continental GTC range, but if covering the 0-62mph dash in 5.0 seconds sounds disagreeable to you, you might want to overlook the entry-level V8 engine. So how does the GTC Speed grab you, with its 0-62mph time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 203mph?
All models are quick, and all can offer accurate steering, comfortable ride quality and crisp handling. The problem the Bentley has is that it is a bulky car, something which is revealed in emphatic terms when you take it down narrow country roads. Still, there is plenty of grip on offer, and four-wheel drive comes as standard.[vc_single_image image=”44710″ img_size=”article-image”][vc_single_image image=”44711″ img_size=”article-image”]It isn’t as lithe as the Aston Martin, but that four-wheel drive system certainly helps to keep it composed on trickier surfaces.
The Bentley won’t save you much at the filling station, despite its new 4.0-litre V8 engines being more fuel-efficient than the W12’s they’ve replaced. Bentley claims official fuel economy returns of 26mpg, but it’s likely that you’ll bat averages of around 21mpg, especially if you explore its limits.Road noise is kept to a minimal, either with the roof up or down. The roof boasts triple-layer construction, and sound insulation is very good. The interior is supremely luxurious and unparalleled, and sports more contemporary flourishes than the Aston Martin. Hand-stitched leather seats are a special highlight, as are chrome buttons and lashings of wood trim. Tech highlights include Google-Maps-based sat nav, which is as accurate as these things come in 2016.The boot measures only 235-litres, which is a bit disappointing. You actually get more space in a Ford Fiesta! You do, though, get a pair of rear seats which are perfect for any kids you have.

The new Ferrari California T Convertible is more of a cruiser than a race car dynamo – but this is very much a good thing.
A turbocharged 3.9-litre V8 engine powers the Ferrari, and you might already be scrolling down to the end of this review in disgust. But before you make up your mind too hastily, the addition of turbochargers hasn’t dampened this car’s character in any way. You have to work the engine harder, but who doesn’t like a challenge?[vc_single_image image=”44713″ img_size=”article-image”]The car is still rapid, too, and can get you from rest to 62mp in just 3.6 seconds before maxing out at 196mph. A row of buttons has replaced the traditional gearstick, while you also benefit from the brand’s iconic Manettino switch, which lets you flick between three different driving modes.And if you want more driving thrills, you can snap up an optional Handling Speciale package for an extra £5,500. With this, you get a louder exhaust, stiffer suspension and a transmission able to deliver quicker shifts.
Despite the addition of turbochargers, the Ferrari will still be expensive to run. Ferrari claims you can enjoy fuel economy returns of 24.1mpg, but unless you drive it like your mum drives her Clio, you’ll really struggle to regularly achieve anything beyond 19mpg.[vc_single_image image=”44714″ img_size=”article-image”]The cabin is classically Ferrari. Prancing horses abound to remind you of the car’s heritage, while the racy dials evoke the atmosphere of a proper race car. The rev counter is positively massive, but the satellite navigation looks oddly low-key.
Labels for the gear selector buttons are difficult to read, and we get the impression that there are bits missing. In other words, to really turn this into a proper Ferrari experience, you’ll need to bump the price up with a lot of expensive optional extras.There are four seats, with the rear two suitable only for kids. ISOFIX mounts are present, which is a nice touch, and it means your kids don’t have to lose out. Leg and headspace are good, but storage space is poor, while the boot measures an impressive 340-litres.

If it’s glamour you want during balmier summer months, you can’t really go wrong with a convertible with a bit of heritage, such as this one here. A lot of work has gone into making the Vanquish Convertible an engineering marvel, and for the most part, it’s paid off. The car is quick, fluid, (mostly) forgiving, and moves around bends like a suave tango dancer on the ballroom.
If the enormous price tag isn’t an issue for you, getting your hands on one of the 21st century’s most timeless cars is worth serious consideration.
