For a long long time now, the Audi A8 has been the big saloon of choice for anyone who isn’t looking to make a big, brash statement with their set of wheels. Understated, refined, but oh so beautiful, it’s one for people who want to enjoy their driving experience with a touch of class.
But although this third generation variant certainly marks an improvement on its parents, it now faces some tough rivals in its sector with Mercedes and Volvo beefing things up. Will efficiency, smarter interiors and a celebrated level of discretion help it to retain its popularity? Let’s take a look at what it has to offer with our review.
Audi A8 3.0TDITest Drive
There was a time when the stream of engines in the A8 range was so colourful that it was almost irrational; it was almost too much. Audi have seemingly realised this and have cut the range down somewhat and “rationalised” it if you will. With that said, there are still some eye-catching units on offer here.
Most buyers will no doubt want to get their hands on one of the diesels, which include a hefty 3.0-litre TDI V6. In the MKII model, this power plant had 258PS but now has 262. Another popular choice will be the V8 4.2-litre TDI variant which comes with a mercurial output of 385PS. Both the 4.2 and the 3.0 come with a choice between a long or short wheelbase, while another mouth-watering engine in the range is the 4.0-litre TFSI petrol that comes with Active Noise Cancellation and can get you from rest to 62mph in 4.2 seconds.
But perhaps the most impressive of all the engines is the 4.2 TDI diesel which rockets torque to 850Nm, a figure which dwarves that created by the Lamborghini Aventador and the Ferrari 458 Italia.
Audi A8 Saloon Interior, Design And Build
The Audi A8 is unchanged in terms of measurements, and is the same length, width and height as last time around. There have, however, been a few slight but noticeable tweaks to the overall design. The bonnet has been re-sculpted, while the single frame grille has also been revised. Moreover, the front bumper is now significantly sleeker than before, while the headlight units are more comely. Other revisions include the LED tail lamps and the bumper, while a more varied choice of paint finishes have been added.
Step inside, and you’ll be treated to an interior that is a cut above. You get to choose from a wide variety of plush leathers, as well as wood and metal trim inlays, while a Unikat leather trim that is soft and gorgeous to look at will no doubt be popular with buyers. There is an updated version of the MMI control interface that mounts on top of a colour display screen, which you will find on the dash. Boot-space is good too, and has a starting capacity of 510-litres with all the seats folded down.
Audi A8 Saloon Price And Running Costs
Prices for this suave saloon start out from £60,000 for the base-level 3.0 TDI quattro unit that will prove to be the most popular. There are three trim levels available:
- SE Executive
If you want to get your hands on one of the S8 models, you will need to part with around £80,000, while the 2.0 hybrid TFSI models will demand around £63,000.
Although expensive, the Sport models look the part, and have been treated this time around to 19” alloys and an impressive 7-parallel spoke design.
In terms of running costs, the 3.0TDI diesel can return around 47.9mpg if you drive it carefully while emitting 149g/km of CO2. There is only one model in the A8 range that out rivals the 3.0 TDI when it comes to emissions; the frugal A8 Hybrid emits 147g/km of CO2 while returning 44.8mpg.
The 4.2-litre TDI diesel can return 39.2mpg on a good day, while the mighty A8 L W12 4WD returns a meagre 24.1mpg while emitting 270g/km of CO2.
Verdict On The Audi A8 Saloon
The big saloon, luxury car segment is not jam-packed with choices, but what cars there are are all equally impressive. The Audi A8 is no exception, and is a show horse for the brand’s newest, most innovative and clever technologies. Audi have also added Cylinder on Demand (CiD) technology to the MKIII version, which ensures a formidable luxury car that can rival the best of them. Beautiful, innovative and reliable, this the A8 is a car you need to try.
