Alfa Romeo expand their MiTo trim levels

Alfa Romeo fans were treated to some exciting news recently when the popular Alfa Romeo MiTo range was boosted by the introduction of two new models. The Progression will be the new base-level variant, whilst the aptly named Junior has been designed to capture the spirit of the charismatic 1966 original.

Alfa Romeo MiTo

Alfa Romeo clearly have a lot of affection for their MiTo models; in 2014, they subjected them to a whole host of revamps, including improving the interior, implementing a 5” touchscreen infotainment system, as well as modifying the exterior, introducing new options, and expanding the list of standard equipment. And now, in 2015, they’ve gone one step further by welcoming a brand new pair of trim levels to the fold.

The Progression has lowered the entry-level pricing point, and is available for just £12,670. This will be music to the ears of many car aficionados who have for a long time dreamed of owing an Alfa Romeo, but who just haven’t been able to scrape together the pennies. The Progression is indeed the car to make Alfa Romeo’s more accessible. The Junior meanwhile, will cause many Alfa enthusiasts to get misty eyed, as it evokes the legacy of the 1966 GT 1300 Junior original, a car that was suave, sophisticated, and which looked as though it should be the star of a cool French new wave movie.

The Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression

Entry-level cars are great for buyers who can’t afford to go any higher, but the problem is that sometimes even these base-level bargains are not exactly bargains and meanwhile come with just a few trickles of standard equipment. Not so for the 2015 Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression. With prices starting from just £12,670, this car comes with the kind of standard equipment that you’d normally find in a premium hatchback. This means that buyers are treated to air conditioning, a leather steering wheel, as well as a leather gear shifter; a 5” colour touch screen infotainment system with Bluetooth, and steering wheel remote controls.

There are a number of (award winning) engines available for the new Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression, and they include a 1.4-litre unit that develops 78bhp and can get to 60mph from rest in 13.0 seconds en route to a top speed of 103mph. It comes with the Start & Stop system that allows it to qualify for EU6 certification, and it returns 50.4mpg, whilst emitting just 130g/km of CO2. More frugal engines in the range include a turbocharged 0.9-litre TwinAir petrol unit that is good for 105bhp and which emits a mere 99g/km of CO2. If you opt for this particular engine, you’ll need to fork out £13,770.

Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior

Whereas the Progression will seek to extend the Alfa Romeo MiTo’s demographic by appealing to cash-strapped buyers who are looking to drive a prestigiously badged car on a budget, the 2015 Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior is aiming its striking looks at buyers who want a bit of Alfa style and Romeo pizzazz in their life. Complete with 17” wheels, a moon-white finish, as well as front fog lights, satin-effect door handles and matching door mirror caps, it’s got all the suave of a smoking sixties movie star. Indeed, if James Dean was a car …

There are a pair of engines on offer, a 0.9-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel. The former develops 105bhp and races to 60mph from rest in 11.4 seconds, whilst the latter produces 85bhp that helps it get to 60mph from rest in 12.9 seconds before maxing out at 108mph. Inspired by the 1966 GT 1300 Junior original, the new Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior utilises the same ethos of the wedding together Coupe sexiness, character, and small-capacity. Whilst the original is now well and truly a collector, this slick chap is very much the future. With a sporty personality that is steeped in tradition, it’s got you covered on agility and quality driving.
