It’s taken BMW quite a while to come up with a rival to the powerful and dominant Mercedes CLS-Class, a car that has reigned supreme in the 4-door executive coupe market for quite some time now, but they’ve finally done it with the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, a car that is elegant, finely finished, and which has amazing efficiency. An impressive car, especially if you like your coupes to be more grand touring than anything else. Let’s take a closer look at what this car has to offer.

However you spec this BMW up, you’ll be getting your hands on a fast car. When you’re roaring down the motorway, it barely asks any effort from you at all. The diesel unit is a little less powerful, but it offers more torque than the petrol variant, although it should be mentioned that the petrol in question here is one of the most impressive in BMW’s entire range; a 3.0-litre turbocharged six pot that sounds awesome, and does a grand job at pulling along such a heavy car as the gran coupe at high speeds.

The BMW 6 series gran coupe also goes some way to justifying BMW’s “ultimate driving machine” moniker. It’s comfortable, fun and even relaxing to drive, with the seats aiding your on-the-road experience. The sheer weight and size of the car is worth mentioning, though. You can’t throw this vehicle into corners, but instead have to almost caress it so that you don’t get caught out. The M-sport suspension is a tad stiff, and you might find it hard to handle on rougher roads.

There is a V8 650i engine on offer which takes performance to a whole other level, but it’s hard to justify the asking price. There are two 640 variants on offer, both of which should be fast enough for most buyers who want to get in a bit of trouble, but who don’t want to use up too much fuel.

It’s fair to say that BMW have not been bringing their A-game to the design table in recent years, but fortunately they proved they’ve still got it when they conceived the rather masterful aesthetics of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. This is a commanding exec saloon that is not overly dressed to impress, but which still looks as austere as you’d like. At the front, it looks like the 6 Series Coupe, but it’s from the aide where it comes into its own with a longer wheelbase and extra doors.

BMW have also borrowed a few features common on some of their other models, such as LED headlights, the so-called “shark nose,” and long, flat bonnet. It’s all visually pleasing stuff.

Inside the car, lightweight seats offer supreme levels of comfort and come with integral belts. The cockpit is, as usual, very driver-centric, while the electronic handbrake and automatic gear selector are nice touches. The instruments, meanwhile, real of high quality, while iDrive has been tweaked so that it is now more user-friendly. The contrast leather stitching is also worth a mention.

In the rear, things might seem a little bit difficult at first thanks to tiny door apertures, as well as an unusually low roofline. But once you get inside and get comfortable, passengers will have a very pleasant experience – as long as you’re not too tall! The sweeping roofline is a cause for concern, but it’s at least offset somewhat by the extended wheelbase. The boot offers 460-litres of space with all the seats folded down, and can be increased to 1,265.

BMW 6 Series Price And Running Cost

Prices for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe start out from around £59,430 and rise up to the region of £72,000. There are three engines available, and each one comes with the stop-start system that improves efficiency. The results are very good, with the 640d diesel returning numbers of 51.4mpg on a good day while emitting around 147g/km of CO2. This means you would pay £145 in road tax per year.

The 640i petrol offers decent numbers, too; it can race from rest to 62mph in 5.4 seconds, and returns 37.7mpg.
