The history of Renault
Renault dates back to a time when owning a car was a luxury. When the company introduced their first car in 1900 it cost the equivalent of an average worker’s salary over 10 years, 3,000 francs.
Following the First World War, Renault worked on the development and production of aircraft engines and in the 1930s purchased a stake in Air France, took over Caudron – a French aircraft manufacturer. The company also established an airmail business.
Renault were innovative, introducing their first diesel engines for the commercial vehicles they manufactured in 1931.
During World War II Renault factories in France were taken over by Germany and the company’s Billancourt factory was a target for RAF bombers. However, this didn’t affect the work ethic of the company and just a few weeks after the Liberation of Paris in 1944 the factory opened its doors again.
During the 1950s the company moved assembly of some of their cars, including the Dauphine and De Luxe Saloon to the UK, even gifting one of their Dauphines to the Queen.
In 1984 Renault launched the ever-popular MPV, the Espace, which was sold in the UK until 2011. The launch of the Espace defined a brand new type of car with the MPV.
1991 marked the launch of the Clio the hatchback with the incredibly successful and well-known “Papa, Nicole” campaign.
