Nissan To Sue Vote Leave Campaign

Japanese automaker Nissan will take legal action against Vote Leave, Britain’s official campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.

The company claims Vote Leave used their logo on leaflets without any authorisation.

On a particular Vote Leave flyer, Nissan’s logo was included alongside a quartet of other major companies, including Vauxhall.

The accompanying message read: “Major employers … have all said they’ll stay in the UK whatever the result of the referendum.”

Nissan insist they had said no such thing, and would actually prefer it if Britain remained inside the EU.

The company said it will commence legal in Britain’s High Court on Monday in bid to prevent Vote Leave from printing its name and logo on their leaflets, and “to prevent them making any further false statements and misrepresentations concerning Nissan.”

“Extremely Disappointed.”

Nissan said in a statement: “We were extremely disappointed to discover that the Vote Leave campaign had been using the Nissan name and logo in their literature and on their website without our permission. We immediately requested that they stop doing so.

“To be clear, Nissan is not supporting any political campaign regarding this most serious of issues. This is a matter for the people of the UK to decide.

“As such, we will be issuing legal proceedings today in the High Court asking for an injunction to stop Vote Leave’s use of Nissan’s name and logo, and to prevent them from making any further false statements and misrepresentations concerning Nissan.”

It isn’t the first time the Vote Leave campaign has been accused of misleading voters. Before Nissan’s complaint, three of Britain’s top employers had already claimed that the campaign had wrongfully used their logo’s to strengthen the case for Brexit.

The EU Referendum takes place on June 23rd.
