WHAT IS AN MPV?

Are you searching for a car that the whole family can fit in comfortably? If you are then an MPV might be exactly what you’re looking for.

A Multi-Purpose Vehicle, also known as an MPV, is the perfect car for you if you have a large family. In the US and other places outside Europe they are referred to as minivans or people carriers due to their size and the amount of seating provided.

They are not the most fuel-economical vehicles, however if you have more than two children (or several large dogs) the abundance of interior space available and some very clever storage ideas is ideal and gives you a lot of flexibility without the need to search for a solution that costs an arm and a leg.

There are several different types of MPV available, depending on what you’re looking for. These types include:

  • Leisure Activity Vehicle (LAV) – slightly taller than the traditional MPV with two to three rows of seating.
  • Compact MPV – smaller than the traditional MPV or people carrier, making them more suitable for narrower roads and smaller parking spaces.

If you’re looking for a large family car, or just a car with tonnes of space and spacious seating, an MPV might be perfect for you. Below is a range of makes and models that we can offer. Give us a call now on 01903 538835 or drop us a message here to request a call back at a time that suits you.

HISTORY OF THE MPV

In 1979, Volkswagen replaced their popular VW Type 2 (better known as the VW Bus) with the Transporter T3/Caravelle. While they retained the rear-engine design of the Bus, they changed the exterior appearance, making it more boxy.

Designed by Matra, the Renault Espace was introduced to the market in 1984. The Espace was a front-wheel drive van that had four front-hinged doors. Though, initially, the Espace was a slow-seller, it went on to become one of the most successful sellers of its type. From the end of the 1970s, the American-made Chrysler Voyager and Ford Aerostar were introduced to the European market.

Ten years after the Espace was first sold, in 1994, Lancia, Citroën, Peugeot and Fiat worked together to produce their own competition to the popular seller, and a year later, Ford and Volkswagen released their own joint venture (which eventually became the Ford Galaxy and Volkswagen Sharan).

Today the MPV is still a very popular choice. Current models include the VW Sharan, Renault Megan Scenic (1996), VW Touran (2003) and the Kia Carnival.
