Is it safe to get a new vehicle during the Coronavirus outbreak?

It’s likely that when the subject of searching for a new vehicle comes up you have several reasons why you shouldn’t at the forefront of your mind. It could be that you’re reading this thinking “I have a lot on my plate right now…a new car is the last thing I’m going to think about” or “I know that production has stopped, so there’s no point in looking right now”.

However, there are quite a few reasons why the second point actually makes this a really good, and relatively safe, time to start looking for a new vehicle.

It may well be that your current lease is due for renewal in the next few months, or the cost of repairs to your ten-year-old Ford Fiesta works out to be more than the car would be worth as a part-exchange. Whatever the reason you’re thinking about looking, if you’re currently stuck at home due to the COVID-19 lockdown, then now would be a really good opportunity to start researching your next vehicle.

The fact that most, if not all, vehicle manufacturing plants across Europe are closed means that all production is currently on hold. While this may seem like a bad thing, and you may think it is if your vehicle is already in the production queue and had a build slot allocated, it can actually be a positive if you’re just starting your search.

Can I still buy a new car during the Coronavirus lockdown?

Yes, you can. Though all dealerships have closed their doors due to the fact that they aren’t classed as an essential service during the lockdown, as an independent broker, OSV is still able to take orders for new vehicles and ensure that they are submitted to the relevant offices for finalising.

If you have been contemplating a new vehicle and were worried that any order you placed while factories and dealerships are closed due to the Coronavirus would be misplaced, then we would like to reassure you that this is not the case.

In fact, if you do place your order right now you will be in a much better place than if you waited until the crisis is over and everything is reopened. Once manufacturers open their plants and they have a fully-functioning supply chain, they will start building the orders that were received before the lockdown and then start work on any orders that were received while they were closed. This would actually put you in a strong position and mean that, depending on how long the lockdown lasts, your new vehicle could be with you by September/October.
