WHAT IS A SALOON?

Are you looking for a sleek car big enough for a small family and comfortable enough to make the daily commute an enjoyable one? If so then a saloon might be perfect for you.

The saloon car, known as a sedan in the US, is one of the most popular car types on the market at the moment, a stylish vehicle that’s at the top of many lists when it comes to choosing a new car. They have an executive look but they are also spacious enough to serve as a comfortable car for the family.

The current definition of a saloon – taken from the French word salon which translates into English as ‘room’ – is a car with a closed body (e.g. a fixed roof) made using a three-box configuration. The three-box is how the three separate compartments of the car – engine, passenger and cargo – are referred to when looking at car design.
The saloon car is the core model for premium car makers such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

If you’ve got more than three children and only plan on using your car to do the daily school run or do the weekly shop then the saloon is likely not the model for you. However, if comfort is important and you’ve got a long drive ahead of you (or hours sitting in traffic on the motorway) then it’s worth taking a look at our wide range of saloon cars.

If you’re looking for comfortable and spacious car ideal for family trips and a long daily commute then a saloon might be ideal for you. Below is a range of makes and models that we can offer. Give us a call now on 01903 538835 or send us a message to request a call back at a time that suits you.

HISTORY OF THE SALOON

It wasn’t until 1912 in the United States that “sedan” began being applied to an enclosed passenger car: the 1911 Speedwell sedan, manufactured by the Speedwell Motor Company Ohio.

In the early 1920s the Standard Motor Company in the UK manufactured their first saloon body cars. By 1922 the saloon body was being mass-marketed at the company’s Coventry factory.

Since the first saloons were manufactured they, like many other car types, have gone through their ups and downs. The saloon is seen as a luxury model, ideal to show the success or status of a business or individual.

Though the popularity of the saloon car has fallen in recent years, being replaced by the more practical and larger SUV, the saloon is still a big seller. The BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Jaguar XE and Audi A4 are still incredibly popular prestige vehicles; fun to drive and with a sporty feel. The focus of companies like BMW and Jaguar is on comfort and prestige.
