Are Vauxhall reliable?

Vauxhall suffers from very few issues when it comes to reliability, with owners of newer cars reporting very few problems with their cars. In the most recent survey conducted by Which? in 2018, Vauxhall placed 21st out of 36 car brands and earned 4 stars out of 5 for their newer models. Cars over 3 years of age didn’t fare quite so well, only earning 2 stars out of 5 due to consistent problems with ignition systems and air conditioning.

The history of Vauxhall

Vauxhall’s first car rolled off the production line in 1903 and in the same year 70 further vehicles followed it. Two years later, in order to expand their production capabilities, the business moved from Vauxhall to Luton.

In 1925 the company experienced its first change in ownership when it was purchased for $2.5m by the American car company, General Motors. After the buyout the direction of Vauxhall was changed and they started to produce lower-cost models like the Vauxhall Cadet.

During the Second World War car production at the Vauxhall factory in Luton was halted and the business turned their attention to building the Churchill tank.

Once the war ended, Vauxhall continued to produce cars, with a second plant opening at Ellesmere Port to handle expansion of the business. In 1963 they started to produce the Vauxhall Viva, a small family car, competition for the Ford Anglia.

By 1975, Vauxhall car sales had increased, following the introduction of the Chevette and Cavalier. Both these successful models were based on cars produced by Opel. Following the release of these two popular cars, Opel started to market their cars in the UK rebranding them as Vauxhall.

Today Vauxhall and their parent company, Opel, are both owned by French motoring giant PSA Group, having been purchased in 2017.

In 2018 over 7% of new cars on UK roads have a Vauxhall badge.
