Vauxhall Astra SRi car review and test drive

“If Aston Martin were to make a small three-door hatchback it would look like this” is the considered opinion of the tall loud guy from Top Gear, and here at OSV we have to concede that he may, just for once, have a point.  Not only is the new Astra SRi a fine machine to look at but at OSV we have some amazing lease hire deals that will rocket you from 0 – 60 in 7.9 seconds (which coincidentally is the same speed that the 2.0 Astra will take you there!)

The frequent, and not unjustified, complaint with Vauxhalls in the past is the quality of the finish and trim but on the outside the new Astra SRi doesn’t suffer from the faults of its predecessors.  Inside the décor and trim is still a little basic but there is still enough to compensate for this; plenty of seat and steering wheel adjustment, electronically adjustable wing mirrors and air-con with pollen filters.

As always safety and security have been competently addressed by Vauxhall.  There is remote control deadlocking on all doors, petrol cap and tailgate, and inside a central locking switch on the centre console.  There is also electronic theft protection on the audio equipment.  From a safety perspective there are dual front, side and curtain airbags, Active Head Restraints and seatbelt pre-tensioners, all designed to reduce the potential for whiplash injuries in the event of an accident.

And perhaps the best till last?  The ‘Sport’ button!  This will certainly make a noticeable change to the driving experience with a marked improvement in control and handling literally at your fingertips.  The suspension stiffens and there is a marked confidence when cornering with the chassis suffering very little body roll.  And when it comes to stopping in a hurry, the ABS with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) makes sure this happens as safely and under control as possible.
