Driving Licence categories explained

When you get your driving licence, you can legally drive any car you like, on any public road. While this may be common knowledge, it is less common knowledge that your licence actually allows you to go further than that.

You know those numbers and letters on the back of your licence? Those state what you can and cannot drive. Many ignore them or don’t even think about them because they only drive a car, but you might be curious as to what those driving categories mean.

So in this article, we are going to look at each licence category and what it means. We will also look at how old you have to be to drive certain vehicles.

What are the licence categories for Mopeds?

Mopeds are a popular sight on our roads, particularly in cities due to the fact you can park them easier and scoot through city traffic. So here are the licence categories for mopeds;

Category AM

This is a fairly new classification and means that you can drive two- or three-wheeled vehicles with a maximum design speed of between 15.5mph and 28mph. This also includes quad bikes with an unladen mass of no more than 350kg and a maximum design speed of over 15.5mph but no more than 28mph.

To have this category on your licence you will need to pass a compulsory basic training (CBT) test.

Category P

Category P means you can drive 2-wheeled vehicles with a maximum design speed of over 28mph but not more than 31mph. The engine size must not be more than 50cc if it’s powered by a combustion engine.

Category Q

You can drive 2-wheeled vehicles with an engine size no more than 50cc (if powered by an internal combustion engine) and a maximum design speed of no more than 15.5mph.

What are the licence categories for cars?

Category B – if you passed your test before 1st January 1997

If you passed your test before 1st January 1997 then you can drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg. You are also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM). This means you can drive a bus with more than 8 passenger seats and a trailer up to 750kg.

Category DE

The same as above but with a trailer over 750kg.

Other licence categories

The following categories are ones that probably don’t turn up on many people’s licences but will pop up occasionally. Also, it’s always good to know what category you need to legally drive a road roller.

If you have this on your licence then you are allowed to drive any agricultural tractor.

Category G

Fancy driving a road roller? You’ll need Category G on your licence.

Category H
