The Peugeot 5008 is an underrated but thoroughly competitive 7 seat family MPV which returns in a revised 1st generation form to stay fresh to the needs of the market.
A sleeker makeover and the addition of extra equipment are the key changes in a design that was already very good. The Peugeot 5008 presents us with a smart and sensible people carrier that is sized as a middle ground between large and compact people carriers. This car aces on practicality, especially in reference to its party trick – a cargo capacity that no one in this class can even come close to. If Peugeot have put all their eggs into it, it can be certain that you won’t be running out of omelettes in a hurry.
The exterior of the Peugeot 5008 has changed for the better from the older version. It’s sleek and modern, fitting well with the characteristic Peugeot design style. There are sharper headlamps (with LED sections on the lower part) and the letterbox grille has been replaced by a much classier looking floating style grille similar to those found on the 208 and 2008. There are chrome panels and a few other nice touches here too. The square rear emphasises the practicality factor of this car with a low lip and big tailgate which opens up into this car’s major selling point – a gigantic 2506ltr total cargo space that nothing can come close to – not even the longer and more expensive Ford C-Max. This even rivals and overshadows some of the large MPV’s in the class above so one thing’s for certain – if you’re looking for cargo space then the Peugeot 5008 is your man… or car rather. You can improve this even further by folding down the front passenger seat to carry longer items like a kayak (should you wish). Obviously with all 7 seats up this isn’t the case, but there are some handy 60ltr underfloor compartments to bolster the meagre amount of room even in this state. If you have the 3rd row folded down into the floor and the 2nd row all the way back then you’ll find yourself with 758ltrs. If the 2nd row seats are pushed forwards then this extends to 823ltrs (that’s 30ltrs more than a Citroen Grand C4 Picasso).
The 3rd row of seats is easily accessible by a button on the 2nd row chair which folds the seat up and allows you to move it forward to create space. This space feels mildly bigger than what you might get in other 7 seaters of this class but don’t let that fool you – as with any of these cars, the back still can’t be that comfortable for longer journeys. However the 2nd row seats can move and be adjusted independently so when fully occupied you can adjust to suit the legroom that’s needed. Speaking of the second row, along with some decent MPV style room, we have 3 identical (and equally adjustable in just about whichever way you care to do so) seats that also spare the middle occupant the bother of having to straddle a transmission tunnel hump by giving us a flat floor (which also includes some handy underfloor storage compartments). There are side pillar vents, aeroplane style seatback tables, and door blinds around this section also. Popping into the front, you’ll find the plushest cabins you’ll find in any car of this class with metallic highlights, soft touch and padded trims – the high quality factor is obvious. The driving position can be adjusted between a hatchback style low stance or a high and commanding MPV view large windscreen and deep side windows ensure you’ve got an expansive view around regardless of your seat position. The Peugeot 5008 has some nice technology here such as the folding top of a dash satnav screen and the swanky heads up display that pops into your eye line as you drive (preventing you from having to do anything vaguely energetic like having to look down at the actual dials). Combined with the high central console, this enhances the cockpit effect in the driver’s seat of the Peugeot 5008. Practicality wise, the glove box is somewhat limited due to sharing space with the fuse box, but aside from that there are enough bins, cup holders and cubby holes to suitably keep all your bits and pieces, including a large air conditioned central storage compartment which is handy for keeping drinks cool or transporting organs.
To drive the Peugeot 5008 you’ll notice that it’s actually got better handling than most 7 seaters out there. It even markets itself as a people carrier that is loved by the driver as well as the family its carrying. The ride quality is supple and the drive is engaging for something of this size, easily eating up miles on the road. There is plenty of grip, the steering is precise and the body roll is minimal – especially with the Dynamic Roll Control system (which cleverly pressurises the dampeners on the innermost wheel of the bend, thereby keeping the car level at all times) that is only available with the top of the range models. The Peugeot 5008’s engine line consists of 5 units – 2 petrols and 3 diesels. Of the petrol, there is a 118bhp 1.6ltr unit and a 1.6ltr turbo engine – the top petrol being able to reach 62mph from standing in 9.7 seconds up to a top speed of 121mph. The HDi diesels can probably do you one better for economic viability and pulling power (especially for those who want to tow). The top 2.0 HDi engine boasts 150bhp and can go 0-62mph in 10 seconds up to a max speed of 118mph.
All in all, what do we have here with the Peugeot 5008? We have a very practical and wholly unpretentious car. It also boasts a bigger boot than anything else in this class – its only 4.5 metres long and yet it has more cargo space than a Ford Galaxy. That’s mental! This is a great family package that is somehow very much underrated on the British roads. That being the case, we’ve almost certainly been missing a trick!
